Geography

The Sultanate of Oman is located in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula. In the northwest, the country borders on the United Arab Emirates, in the west on Saudi Arabia and in the southwest on Yemen. The 1700 kilometers of coastline in the east is a natural border. There, Oman borders the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. In total, the area of the country is 309 000 square kilometers, which means that the state is only slightly smaller than Germany. The state territory includes the exclave Musandam on the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates separate Musandam from the rest of the country.
The relief of Oman is clearly visible. Both the north and the south are crossed by mountain ranges, in front of which lies a narrow strip of coast. In the middle lies a large plain that borders the Indian Ocean to the east and the sand desert Rub al-Khali to the west.
